Day 2
Day 1
This presentation will underscore the imperative role of lifestyle medicine as a priority in Romania and Moldova, given that the majority of deaths are caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. If lifestyle has led us here, it must also be the key to reversing this trend. Therefore, lifestyle medicine should become the cornerstone of future medical education. The shared vision and collaboration between Romania and Moldova will pave the way for a unified strategy, making lifestyle medicine the alphabet of healthcare in our region.
Lifestyle Medicine: Hippocrates was Right
Redefining Health in Eastern Europe: The Rise of Lifestyle Medicine
What do you get when you put "First do no harm" together with "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food?" You get Lifestyle Medicine. Medical care must ultimately be about fixing the causes of disease and not only about managing its symptoms. However, change comes slowly in a profession as critical as medicine. Nonetheless, modern medicine now recognizes that lifestyle change is essential to prevent and reverse disease.

Empowering Communities: Reducing Heart Disease through Lifestyle Medicine
10:15 - 10:45
Global healthcare systems are under immense strain due to rising costs, inadequate care delivery, and an escalating burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) driven by aging populations and lifestyle-related factors. Traditional systems are ill-equipped to manage the growing prevalence of chronic diseases and disabilities. Lifestyle medicine offers a transformative, evidence-based solution by targeting root causes through behavioral change. Its integration into primary care is essential yet challenging, given resource constraints. A pioneering project in Malaysia, developed in collaboration with WHO and the Ministry of Health, demonstrated promising outcomes—67% of participants reduced HbA1C within 12 weeks—underscoring lifestyle medicine’s potential as a game changer in public health across Southeast Asia.

The Heart and Soul of Behavioral Change
A global perspective on lifestyle medicine’s evolution and success stories from Europe, Asia and the USA, emphasizing the role of lifestyle interventions in reducing chronic disease. Practical advice for Moldovan primary care doctors interested in transitioning to or incorporating lifestyle medicine into their practice.
The greater our understanding of human physiology and pathophysiology, the more compelling the evidence becomes that Lifestyle Medicine provides superior patient outcomes. From epigenetics to neuroplasticity, and from cardiovascular disease to type 2 diabetes, intensive lifestyle change treatment is becoming the data-driven evidence-based standard of care.
This session explores the vital role of mitochondrial health in human performance and chronic disease prevention. Dr. Loomis reviews how exercise, stress, nutrition, and lifestyle factors impact mitochondrial function and how a whole-food, plant-based diet rich in micronutrients can enhance cellular energy production, reduce oxidative stress, and improve resilience. Attendees will learn how specific nutrients and bioactive compounds—such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and essential cofactors—support mitochondrial biogenesis and function, with practical applications for health optimization and disease management.
Early detection of cancer is critical for successful treatment, yet screening was only available for a few types of cancer. New tests now offer the ability to detect multiple cancers through a simple, non-invasive blood test.
"The Heart and Soul of Behavioral Change" explores the essential foundations and practical strategies for supporting meaningful, sustainable behavior change in health and lifestyle medicine. The presentation emphasizes common elements of change such as motivation, self-efficacy, goal setting, social influence, and the interaction between behavior and environment. It highlights the clinician’s role in fostering patient autonomy, engagement, and resourcefulness. Using evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing, goal-setting theory, and the transtheoretical model, it offers clinicians pathways to help patients identify their motivations, overcome barriers, and build confidence. The talk stresses the importance of social connections, feedback loops, and being present and curious about a patient’s unique story, strengths, and priorities. Ultimately, it positions behavior change as the “engine room” of lifestyle medicine, calling for a coaching mindset where clinicians support patients in their real-world contexts, focusing not just on initiating change but on sustaining it.
